Glacier magic during the mountain summer
Way up high: your summer retreat in Pitztal
Austria’s highest glacier ski area, the Pitztal Glacier, reveals its versatility in the summer months!
All aboard the Glacier Express! And just like that, you quickly ascend to the breathtaking heights of the Pitztal Glacier, dubbed the “roof of Tyrol”. Up here, at altitudes ranging from 2,840 to 3,440 metres above sea level, the world is literally at your feet!
On the Pitztal Glacier, the force of nature is uniquely palpable. From the moment you arrive, an indescribable sense of freedom envelops you. Adventure awaits you at every turn, whether hiking, mountaineering, or exploring the glacier. Alternatively, you can simply let yourself be captivated by the serene well-being that washes over you in the presence of the majestic ice giants. Embrace the moment and cherish it completely.
For those seeking a cosier setting, the Chapel of White Light offers a tranquil space for meditation and finding inner balance. Situated at 2,900 metres above sea level, this small work of art crafted from white Carrara marble stands in striking contrast to the surrounding reddish rock. A meditation trail circles the chapel, featuring various stations that invite you to pause, reflect, and admire. As you walk this 15-minute circuit, you can unwind and gather your thoughts in peace.
The Glacier Cinema, at 3,440 metres above sea level, offers a stunning display – a “screen” unlike any other that frames the ever-changing spectacle of the Alpine and glacial landscape. As the colours and lighting on the glacier shift with the seasons and the time of day, each visit promises a unique “showing” with fresh perspectives to behold. You’ll never see the same show twice!
Trail running on the Pitztal Glacier is a favourite summer activity. Numerous well-marked routes wind around Lake Rifflsee and across the glacier itself. And guess what? The base station of the Glacier Express is just about four kilometres from the Sportalm!
