In the footsteps of the ibex

Ski tours and winter hikes around St. Leonhard

Fresh powder, panoramic views, and fun on the slopes: in the snow-covered landscape of St Leonhard, happiness is on your doorstep.

Billions of snowflakes blanket the landscape, mountain peaks glisten in the winter sun, and a peaceful hush settles over the countryside. While bears, marmots, and hedgehogs are tucked up in their burrows at this time of year, one intrepid creature roams the snowy wilderness. Graceful yet powerful, the ibex picks its way through the snow-covered mountains of the Pitztal Valley in search of food. With luck, you might spot this magnificent animal on your skiing or hiking excursion.

There are numerous trails around the Sportalm in St. Leonhard, perfect for exploring the snow-covered landscape. You can cut your teeth on touring skis using the beginners’ route, which leads from the Hochzeiger mid-station towards Kalbenalmweg. Once you reach your destination, you can either ski back down the piste to the valley or join the Sechszeiger route, which climbs another 233 metres to the top station of the Sechszeiger lift. For more experienced skiers, we recommend the scenic ski tour to the Gogles Alm or, for the truly adventurous, the ascent to the “Top of Tyrol”, the Wildspitze, at 3,774 metres above sea level. Seppi, our Sportalm expert, will be delighted to accompany you on your adventures and show you his favourite spots around St. Leonhard.

Those who prefer to explore the snow-covered three-thousand-metre peaks on foot will find wonderful winter hikes in the glacier region, accessible from December to April. Enjoy the quiet crunch of fresh snow underfoot or join Seppi on an entertaining winter ramble, where he’ll regale you with fascinating stories and intriguing facts about the Pitztal Valley and the Kaunergrat Nature Park. An insider tip for winter hiking enthusiasts: a gentle stroll along the forest edge around the village of Plangeroß offers peaceful moments amidst impressive natural surroundings. And for those in search of something more exhilarating, a walk through the icy valley gorge provides plenty of thrills.

There are countless tours and trails to discover. The best thing to do? Come to the Sportalm in St Leonhard – and see for yourself where your winter tracks will lead.
