Spring days at Lake Rifflsee in Pitztal

A day trip to Austria’s largest mountain lake

The sun grows stronger day by day, the snow is slowly retreating, and high up in the mountains, a turquoise lake begins to shimmer between the rock faces and towering peaks. April is a perfect time to explore the quieter side of Lake Rifflsee as it invites you to enjoy the first spring walks in the high-Alpine landscape.

When spring arrives in Pitztal, it’s time for hikes beneath the gentle spring sun. Lake Rifflsee, Austria’s largest natural mountain lake, lies at an altitude of 2,232 metres, framed by towering peaks and gentle Alpine meadows. When the first flowers begin to bloom down in the valley, the water up here sparkles in vivid shades of turquoise, reflecting the still snow-covered slopes of the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks.

The journey itself is part of the experience. The Rifflseebahn cable car takes visitors comfortably up to the mountain station at more than 2,200 metres above sea level. From there, it is only a short walk to the lakeshore. The moment you reach it, the scenery unfolds in full: Lake Rifflsee rests quietly between rocky outcrops and Alpine pastures, while the peaks of the Pitztal mountains rise high above. The clear mountain air, the gentle sound of small streams, and the wide-open views make this a place that feels both powerful and peaceful.

The popular circular trail around Lake Rifflsee is one of the area’s most rewarding walks. The easy route leads all the way around the lake in around an hour, revealing ever-changing perspectives on the surrounding landscape. At one moment, Wildspitze – Tyrol’s highest mountain – comes into view; at the next, the sky is mirrored in the crystal-clear water. Spring brings a special freshness to the scenery. Between the rocks and in the meadows, the first Alpine plants begin to appear, and with a little luck, you may even spot marmots or ibex in the distance.

Small detours are well worth taking, too. One of them leads to the Verborgene See (“Hidden Lake”), a quiet retreat among rocks and flowing water. Here, frogs, tadpoles, and small fish can be seen in the clear pools. For walkers, nature lovers, and photographers, it is a landscape full of colour, texture, and shifting light – untouched, peaceful, and wonderfully authentic.

After a day spent in the crisp mountain air, the Alpine Resort Sportalm in St. Leonhard is the perfect place to unwind. Settle into the Nature Park SPA, and let the day end in soothing warmth: the Swiss stone pine sauna, the heated infinity pool with mountain views, and relaxing treatments will leave you feeling restored and renewed.
